What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students explain what can happen when a person saves money and when a person spends it. They identify a benefit and a cost for each choice in a simple situation.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can compare two choices, such as buying a toy now or saving for a bicycle. The student names what is gained, what is given up, and supports a choice with a clear reason.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think saving has no cost or that spending is always a bad choice. They may count only the price and overlook what they give up by choosing one option.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: “Maya has $10. She can buy a game today or save toward a $25 scooter. Name one cost and benefit of each choice, then recommend one.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs $10 in play money and priced item cards, then have them choose, save, and record one cost and benefit.

  2. Ask, “Would you spend $8 on a book today or save it for a $20 game? Explain what you gain and give up.”

  3. Play Choice Corners: read a money scenario, students move to Save or Spend, then earn a point for a sound reason.

  4. Use a grocery ad and a $15 budget; students select one treat or save the money, then explain both consequences.
