- Students explain why people save for planned purchases, emergencies, and future goals. They describe benefits such as avoiding debt, handling surprise costs, and earning interest.

- A student can match a savings goal with a clear reason for saving. The student can explain how regular saving provides choices and financial security.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think saving is only for wealthy people or large purchases. They may confuse saving with spending leftover money and expect interest to create quick wealth.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Jordan earns $30 each week and saves $6. Name two benefits Jordan could gain from saving regularly and explain each.
Lesson moves
Ways to Teach It
Give groups play money and expense cards, then have them divide income among spending, emergency savings, and a future purchase.
Ask students to write which is more useful, saving for emergencies or saving for a goal, and defend their answer.
Play a scenario game where students choose whether to save or spend, then draw surprise expense and opportunity cards.
Have students compare two local savings account offers and identify how interest, fees, and minimum balances affect a saver.
