What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify income, planned expenses, and savings in a simple budget. They allocate limited income and revise spending when the plan costs too much.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can build a balanced budget in which expenses and savings do not exceed income. They can explain what they changed when costs increased or income decreased.

Common Misconceptions

Students may plan spending without checking it against total income. Some treat savings as leftover money or incorrectly list it as income. Others confuse a budget with a record of past purchases.

How to Assess It

Give students $80 of weekly income, $60 in listed expenses, and a $10 savings goal. Ask them to complete the budget and explain the remaining $10.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs income, expense, and savings cards, then have them arrange a balanced weekly budget on a poster.

  2. Ask students to write which budget item they would reduce if income dropped by $20 and explain their choice.

  3. Run a budget challenge where teams draw surprise expense cards and revise their plans without exceeding income.

  4. Show an Australian grocery advertisement and have students select food for a household while staying within a set amount in Australian dollars.
