Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students explain why people borrow money for homes, cars, education, emergencies, or purchases. They compare the benefits of borrowing with interest, fees, missed payments, damaged credit, and loss of collateral.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given a borrowing scenario, students can decide whether the debt is manageable and support their choice with numbers. They can identify the total repayment amount and explain at least two possible risks.
Common Misconceptions: Students may view borrowed money as extra income or focus only on the monthly payment. They may think all debt is bad, minimum payments quickly clear balances, or a cosigner has no repayment responsibility.
How to Assess It: Give this exit ticket: You borrow $500 and make twelve $50 payments. Find the borrowing cost, name two risks, and suggest one alternative.

Lesson moves

Give pairs loan cards with payment amounts, interest, fees, and collateral, then have them sort each loan from lowest to highest risk.
Ask students to write: When might taking on debt be reasonable, and what information should a borrower check before agreeing?
Play a borrowing decision game where teams choose among cash, saving, credit cards, and loans for five expense scenarios.
Have students compare the total cost of buying a phone with cash, monthly financing, and a credit card using sample offers.
