What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain that people give money to get an item or have someone do a job. They sort examples into goods and services.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can act out paying for a good or service with pretend money. The student can explain who pays, what they receive, and why.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think money is only coins, or that a credit card gives people free items. They may also confuse a good with a service.
How to Assess It
- Show pictures of a book and a haircut. Ask, “Which is a good, which is a service, and how could you pay for each?”

Ways to Teach It
Set up a classroom store where students use pretend money to buy pencils, snacks, or a turn at a shoe-cleaning service.
Ask students to draw one good and one service their family might pay for, then explain each drawing to a partner.
Play Goods or Services Corners, reading examples aloud while students move to the matching labeled corner.
Examine a grocery receipt and identify the items purchased, the amount paid, and who received the money.
