What Students Need to Do: Students identify money as a common way to pay for goods and services. They explain why paying with money is often simpler than trading one item for another.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can label examples as buying or bartering. They can explain that money helps when two people do not want the items each other offers.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think barter means getting something for free. They may also think trades must involve money or that only coins count as money.
How to Assess It: Give students this prompt: “Mia wants bread, but the baker does not want her toy. How could money help?” Ask for two sentences or a labeled drawing.

Lesson moves

Give pairs item cards to trade by barter, then repeat with play money and compare which method made trading easier.
Ask students to write: “Would you rather buy lunch with money or trade a toy for it? Explain why.”
Play Money or Barter by reading situation cards and having students hold up the matching label.
Examine a grocery receipt and identify the goods purchased, the money paid, and why the store accepts money instead of household items.
