What Students Need to Do: Students explain why a buyer’s money must be converted into the seller’s currency before a cross-border purchase can be completed. They use a given exchange rate to compare costs and describe how rate changes affect buyers and sellers.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can identify which currencies a buyer and seller use, then convert a price with a given exchange rate. The student can explain who pays more or receives less when the rate changes.
Common Misconceptions: Students may assume all African countries use the same currency or that one country’s money can be spent anywhere. They may also think exchange rates are always equal or never change.
How to Assess It: Ask: A South African product costs 50 rand, and 1 rand equals 8 Kenyan shillings. Find the cost in shillings and explain why conversion is needed.

Lesson moves

Give pairs labeled cedi and rand play money, an exchange-rate card, and product cards to complete three purchases.
Ask students to write: Why might a Kenyan buyer care when the shilling loses value against another currency?
Run an exchange-rate relay where teams match invoices, currencies, conversion rates, and correct payment amounts.
Show online prices from two African countries, then have students convert both prices using a printed exchange-rate table.
