What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students explain that countries use different money, so buyers must convert one currency into another to complete purchases. They connect exchange rates to the amount buyers pay and sellers receive.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a price in Saudi riyals and an exchange rate, students can find the approximate cost in US dollars. They can explain why the buyer or bank converts the payment.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think every country accepts US dollars. They may treat an exchange rate as a fixed price or confuse it with a bank fee. Some reverse the rate when converting.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: A Jordanian product costs 50 dinars, and one dinar equals $1.41. Find the dollar cost and explain why conversion is needed.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs dollar and riyal cards, post an exchange rate, and have them buy Saudi oil tokens through a classroom exchange booth.

  2. Write three sentences answering: Why can a US importer not simply pay every Southwest Asian seller in dollars?

  3. Play an exchange-rate relay where teams convert five posted prices in dinars, dirhams, and riyals, then explain each conversion.

  4. Compare an online airline fare shown in UAE dirhams and US dollars, then identify who needs the currency conversion.
