What Students Need to Do: Students explain how buyers convert one nation’s money into another nation’s money to complete a purchase. They describe how exchange rates affect the cost of imports and exports.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can trace a purchase between two Asian countries and identify where currency conversion occurs. They can calculate a simple conversion and explain who pays more when an exchange rate changes.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think all countries use the same currency or that stores accept any nation’s money. They may treat exchange rates as fixed. Some reverse the conversion operation when calculating prices.
How to Assess It: Ask students: “A South Korean buyer purchases a ¥10,000 product from Japan. If ¥100 equals 900 won, how much will the buyer pay, and why?”

Lesson moves

Give pairs play money in yen and won, an exchange rate card, and product cards to complete cross-border purchases.
Ask students to write why a shop in Japan might not accept Indian rupees directly from a customer.
Run an exchange-rate relay where teams convert five product prices using posted currency tables.
Use current menus or store listings from two Asian countries to compare prices after converting both amounts into U.S. dollars.
