What Students Need to Do: Students identify that countries may use different currencies. They explain how buyers convert money into a currency sellers will accept and how exchange rates affect the final cost.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can trace a purchase between two countries that use different currencies. The student correctly identifies which money must be exchanged and explains how the exchange rate changes the price.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think every European country uses the euro or that one nation’s money is accepted everywhere. They may treat an exchange rate as a fixed fee rather than a changing comparison between currencies.
How to Assess It: Give students this prompt: “A British store buys cheese from France. Explain why currency exchange may be needed and how the exchange rate affects the cost.”

Lesson moves

Set up classroom currency booths, then have students exchange play pounds for euros before buying labeled goods from a mock French shop.
Ask students to write why a Polish buyer might need to exchange złoty before purchasing goods priced in euros.
Play an exchange-rate relay where teams use a rate chart to calculate the converted prices of five European products.
Compare online prices for the same game in euros and pounds, then convert both prices to decide which purchase costs less.
