What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students recognize U.S. coins and dollar bills as money. They explain that people use this money to buy goods and services.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can pick out coins and dollar bills from a mixed group of objects. The student can say that both are used to pay for things.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think only dollar bills are money, or that every round metal object is a coin. They may confuse coupons, receipts, or play tickets with U.S. currency.
How to Assess It
- Show a penny, quarter, dollar bill, coupon, button, and receipt. Ask students to point to the U.S. currency and tell how people use it.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs play coins, dollar bills, coupons, and toy cards, then have them sort the items into U.S. money and not money.
Ask, “What could you buy with money, and what would you hand the cashier?” Students draw an answer and explain it.
Play Money or Not by revealing one picture at a time while students hold up a money card or a not-money card.
Set up a class store where students choose an item and pay with a play coin or dollar bill.
