Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students identify whether an example is an object people buy or work someone does for another person. They sort familiar examples, such as toys, food, haircuts, and bus rides, and explain their choices.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given six picture cards, a student correctly sorts objects and work people perform. The student explains that a toy is an object to buy, while a haircut is work someone does.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think anything that costs money is an object to buy. They may label a worker, such as a barber, instead of naming the work performed. They may think services produce nothing because there is no object to carry home.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Show pictures of an apple and a haircut. Students label each one and explain one choice aloud.

Lesson moves

Give pairs picture cards of bread, shoes, haircuts, and bus rides, then have them sort the cards into two labeled hoops.
Ask, "Is a haircut something you take home or work someone does for you?" and have students explain their choice.
Play Goods or Services: name an example, and students move to the matching side of the room and give a reason.
Compare a grocery receipt with a haircut receipt, circling purchased objects and underlining work someone performed.
