What Students Need to Do: Students explain how privately owned businesses use workers and resources to make products or provide services. They identify examples and tell how sales help a business continue operating.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can sort local businesses by the goods or services they provide. They can explain who owns the business, what customers receive, and how the business earns money.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think private means hidden or open only to certain people. They may also think every business sells a physical product or that private businesses are run by the government.
How to Assess It: Give students this exit ticket: “A family owns a bicycle repair shop. What service does it provide, and how does it earn money?”

Lesson moves

Set up a classroom bakery with paper goods, assigned workers, play money, and customer orders to model production and sales.
Ask students to write how a grocery store uses workers and resources to serve customers and earn money.
Play a sorting game using business cards labeled goods, services, privately owned, or government operated.
Have students interview a local business owner about what the business provides, whom it employs, and how customers pay.
