Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students identify how employees exchange their time, effort, and skills for wages or salaries. They explain the roles of the worker and the employer in a job scenario.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can name the worker, employer, work performed, and income earned in an example. They can explain that hourly wages and salaries are two ways businesses pay employees.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think workers sell a product rather than their time and skills. They may confuse employee income with business revenue or assume every worker is paid by the hour.
How to Assess It: Give this exit ticket: “Maya stocks shelves at a grocery store and earns $12 per hour. Identify the employer, labor, and income.”

Lesson moves

Set up a classroom bakery with job cards, play money, and pay slips, then have managers pay workers for completed tasks.
Ask students to write: “What does a worker give a business, and what does the business give the worker?”
Play a card-matching game pairing workers, businesses, job duties, and forms of pay such as wages or salaries.
Examine a local job posting and identify the employer, required skills, work duties, and stated pay.
