What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students explain how Georgia’s governor, lieutenant governor, and state agencies carry out state laws and manage public programs. They analyze how executive powers interact with the General Assembly and state courts.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can match executive officials and agencies with their duties, then explain how their actions affect Georgia residents. They can use a government scenario to identify executive powers, limits, and checks from another branch.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think the governor writes and passes laws alone or has the same powers as the president. They may assume the lieutenant governor works directly for the governor, although both are elected separately. They may also confuse state agencies with legislative committees.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: “Georgia passes a new school safety law. Explain one action the governor could take, one agency responsibility, and one legislative check.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups role, power, and agency cards to sort, then have them defend two matches using Georgia government examples.

  2. Ask students to write whether Georgia’s governor should have more power, using two current powers and one limit as evidence.

  3. Run a scenario relay where teams choose which official or agency should respond to events such as a storm, budget dispute, or election.

  4. Use a Georgia governor’s press release and an agency website to trace how one policy moves from executive decision to public service.
