What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students match each part of Georgia’s state government with its main job. They explain who carries out laws, who makes laws, and who interprets laws. They use examples to tell the branches apart.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a government duty, a student names the correct branch and explains the choice. The student connects the governor, General Assembly, and state Supreme Court to their roles without mixing them up.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think the governor makes laws alone or controls every part of state government. They may confuse the Supreme Court of Georgia with the U.S. Supreme Court. Some think the General Assembly is only a building, not a lawmaking body.
How to Assess It
- Give an exit ticket with three actions: signing a bill, voting on a bill, and interpreting a state law. Students name the branch responsible for each action.

Give pairs job, leader, and branch cards, then have them build three matched sets on labeled desk mats.
Ask students to write why lawmakers, the governor, and judges should have different jobs, using one example.
Play Branch Signal by reading government actions while students hold up E, L, or J cards and explain each choice.
Show a governor’s announcement, a General Assembly bill page, and a Georgia Supreme Court opinion heading, then identify each source’s branch.
