What Students Need to Do: Students name the legislative, executive, and judicial branches and describe each branch’s main job. They explain how one branch can limit another using specific Georgia examples.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students correctly connect the General Assembly, governor, and state courts to their powers. They can explain vetoes, veto overrides, appointment confirmations, impeachment, and judicial review with accurate branch roles.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think each branch works alone or that checks and balances means all branches have the same powers. They may say the governor makes laws or courts enforce laws. They may also confuse federal officials with Georgia officials.
How to Assess It: Use this exit ticket: “The governor vetoes a bill, and the General Assembly overrides the veto. Name both branches and explain the check being used.”

Lesson moves

Give groups branch and power cards, then have them sort each power and connect matching checks with string.
Ask students to write which branch they would trust to review an unfair law and explain why.
Play a branch challenge game where teams identify the branch, power, and check shown in short Georgia government scenarios.
