What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain why the governor relies on specialized agencies to carry out state responsibilities. They connect agencies such as DDS, DPH, and DNR to programs they run and laws they enforce. They distinguish agency work from lawmaking and court decisions.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a state government scenario, students can identify the agency most likely to respond. They can explain whether the agency is providing a service, managing a program, or enforcing a law.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think the governor personally manages every state service. They may confuse state agencies with federal or local agencies. They may also think agencies create laws rather than carry out laws passed by the legislature.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: The Department of Natural Resources cites someone for illegal hunting, while the Department of Driver Services renews a license. Explain how each action carries out state government.
