What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students explain how European colonization, African slavery, the Cuban Revolution, poverty, and drug conflict changed Latin America. They connect these events to migration and relations with the United States.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can identify causes and effects, place major events in order, and explain changes over time. They support each explanation with accurate historical details.

Common Misconceptions

Students may assume every Latin American country was colonized by Spain or that all migration has one cause. They may also confuse the Cuban Revolution with later tensions between Cuba and the United States.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Choose colonization, the Cuban Revolution, or drug conflict. Name one cause, one effect, and one lasting change linked to it.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Arrange event and consequence cards for colonization, slavery, the Cuban Revolution, drug conflict, and migration, then build a class timeline.

  2. Write: Which event caused the greatest lasting change in Latin America, and what two facts support your choice?

  3. Play cause-and-effect dominoes by matching historical events to political, economic, and social results.

  4. Use a recent migration graph to identify patterns, then connect two patterns to poverty, violence, or family reunification.
