What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain how Castro’s victory changed Cuba’s government, economy, foreign alliances, and migration patterns. They describe U.S. relations with Cuba through the embargo, diplomatic ties, travel limits, and continuing political disagreements.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can connect major events to clear effects, such as nationalization leading to U.S. economic restrictions. The student can explain why the two countries have diplomatic contact but remain politically strained.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse the Cuban Revolution with the Cuban Missile Crisis. They may think the embargo ended all trade, travel, and communication, or that Cuba is no longer a communist state.
How to Assess It
- Give an exit ticket with two prompts: name two impacts of the revolution, then explain the current U.S. relationship with Cuba in two sentences. Require one example of contact and one example of tension.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs event and impact cards, then have them build a cause-and-effect chain from Castro’s victory to migration and the U.S. embargo.
Ask students: How did the revolution change life in Cuba and Cuba’s relationship with the United States? Require three specific facts.
Play a card match in which students pair terms such as nationalization, embargo, migration, and embassies with effects or examples.
Give students a current U.S. government travel notice and trade summary, then highlight evidence of contact, restrictions, and tension.
