Students explain why the United States and Soviet Union became rivals after World War II. They connect that rivalry to events such as divided Europe, proxy wars, the arms race, and fear of nuclear war.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think the United States and Soviet Union fought each other directly in one war. They may confuse the Soviet Union with present-day Russia or treat communism and dictatorship as identical terms.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Name one cause of Cold War rivalry and two consequences, then explain one cause-and-effect link in three sentences.

   Give pairs a postwar Europe map and event cards to sort into causes, actions, and consequences.
