What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students build a cause-and-effect chain from the Berlin Wall opening in 1989 to German reunification in 1990 and the Soviet breakup in 1991. They explain how reunification exposed weakening Soviet control in Eastern Europe and reduced Cold War divisions.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can place the main events in order and explain the links between them using accurate dates and details. They describe reunification as one factor in Soviet collapse, not the only cause.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think German reunification immediately caused the Soviet Union to collapse. They may confuse East Germany with the Soviet Union or think the Berlin Wall covered the entire German border. Some place Soviet dissolution before reunification or treat the events as happening in one year.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Use the terms Berlin Wall, reunification, and Soviet Union in three sentences that show cause and effect. Include the years 1989, 1990, and 1991.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups six dated event cards from 1989 to 1991; students arrange them, then connect each with arrows labeled cause or result.
Ask, “Why did a united Germany signal weaker Soviet power in Eastern Europe?” Require two facts from a short source set.
Run a cause-and-effect card match with events on blue cards and consequences on yellow cards, then have pairs defend each match.
Compare political maps of Europe from 1988 and 1991, then identify borders and alliances that changed as Soviet influence weakened.
