What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students put key events from 1917 to 1933 in order and explain cause-and-effect links. They explain how wartime hardship aided the Bolsheviks, how Versailles punished Germany, and how the Depression helped Nazis gain support. They recognize that the economic crisis spread beyond Germany.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can build an accurate timeline for 1917, 1919, 1929, and 1933, then label each event's effects. They use reparations, lost territory, unemployment, and extremist promises as evidence. They clearly distinguish communism from Nazism.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often assume communism and Nazism were the same because both led to dictatorships. They may claim Versailles alone caused the Great Depression or Hitler's rise. Some place the Russian Revolution after the war, though the Bolsheviks took power in 1917.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Put the Russian Revolution, Treaty of Versailles, Great Depression, and Hitler becoming chancellor in date order. Draw two cause-and-effect arrows and label each with an accurate explanation.

Give pairs dated event cards, yarn, and evidence slips, then have them build and label a cause-and-effect timeline across their desks.
Ask students to write: Which mattered more to Nazi support, Versailles resentment or Depression unemployment? Use two facts.
Post Communism, Versailles, Depression, and Nazism signs; read clues such as reparations or Bolsheviks, and have students move, answer, and justify.
Have students cut a sample family budget after a 30 percent income loss, then connect their choices to Depression-era insecurity.
