What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain how Mao Zedong’s policies changed farming, industry, education, culture, and daily life. They connect the Great Leap Forward, Cultural Revolution, and Tiananmen Square protests to their causes and consequences.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students place the major events in order and identify the people, goals, actions, and results tied to each. They explain that government policies and responses caused famine, persecution, social disruption, protest, and loss of life.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think the Great Leap Forward improved China’s economy or that the Cultural Revolution protected traditional culture. They may also think Mao led China during Tiananmen Square, though he died years before the protests.
How to Assess It
- Give students this exit prompt: “Choose one event and explain its goal, one government action, and two effects on Chinese people.”
