What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain why Soviet missiles in Cuba brought the United States and Soviet Union close to nuclear war. They also describe why the United States fought in Vietnam and how the war affected Vietnam and American society.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can place both events within the larger struggle between communism and democracy. They can name key outcomes, including the peaceful removal of missiles, communist control of Vietnam, heavy casualties, protests, and declining trust in government.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think missiles were launched from Cuba or that the crisis became a nuclear war. They may also think the United States fought Soviet troops directly in Vietnam, won the war, or had full public support.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit prompt: Explain one reason the Cuban Missile Crisis mattered and one consequence of the Vietnam War, using two complete sentences.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups maps and event cards to build a timeline showing the Cuban standoff and major stages of United States involvement in Vietnam.
Ask students to write which presidential decision was harder, blockading Cuba or increasing troops in Vietnam, and support their choice with evidence.
Play a consequence matching game using event cards, outcome cards, and Cold War connection cards for both conflicts.
Compare a modern crisis headline with the Cuban standoff, then list ways leaders can reduce conflict without using military force.
