What Students Need to Do: Students identify major people, events, and changes from 1950 to 1975. They explain how Jim Crow, civil rights activism, political assassinations, television, and space exploration affected American life.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students place major events in order and connect each one to a result. They use specific evidence to explain the contributions of leaders such as Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr., Thurgood Marshall, Lyndon B. Johnson, and Cesar Chavez.
Common Misconceptions: Students may treat Jim Crow as personal prejudice rather than laws and public practices. They may credit one leader with ending segregation or confuse the purposes of the Civil Rights Act and Voting Rights Act.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Write one sentence each explaining the importance of Jim Crow, one civil rights leader, one assassination, and television or space exploration.

Lesson moves

Groups arrange dated event cards on a floor timeline, then attach result cards showing how each event changed American life.
Students respond in writing: Which civil rights action created the greatest change, and what evidence supports your choice?
Play a matching game using cards for leaders, events, laws, and outcomes, then have students explain each completed set.
