What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students trace cause-and-effect chains involving low incomes, illegal drug markets, government responses, and migration. They explain how these forces affect families, communities, economies, and governments across Latin America.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can connect each issue to several outcomes, such as violence, corruption, limited public services, family separation, or remittances. They support each connection with an accurate example or clear explanation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume poverty affects every Latin American country in the same way. They may treat drug trafficking as only a crime issue or migration as entirely harmful, overlooking displacement, remittances, and family support.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Choose poverty, illegal drug trafficking, or migration. Write one cause-and-effect chain showing two impacts on a Latin American country or community.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups event cards and yarn to build a cause-and-effect web linking jobs, cartels, violence, remittances, family separation, and public services.
Ask students to write: How can migration help a family while creating problems for its home community?
Play Impact Match, where teams pair issue cards with consequence cards, then defend each match using a because statement.
Use a current remittance chart from the World Bank to calculate how money sent home supports households and national economies.
