What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain what causes air pollution in Mexico City, rainforest loss in the Amazon, and oil pollution in Venezuela. They connect each issue to effects on people, wildlife, land, water, and local economies.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can build an accurate cause-and-effect chain for each environmental issue. They use specific details, such as vehicle exhaust, logging, farming, mining, oil spills, and contaminated water.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat all pollution as the same or assume natural events cause most damage. They may also overlook how jobs, government decisions, and consumer demand contribute to environmental problems.
How to Assess It
- Give students three labeled boxes: Mexico City, Amazon rainforest, and Venezuela. For each, have them write one cause, one environmental effect, and one human effect.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups location, cause, and effect cards to sort into chains for Mexico City, the Amazon rainforest, and Venezuela.
Ask students to write which issue should receive funding first, using two facts to defend their choice.
Run a cause-and-effect relay where teams match environmental problems with locations, causes, and impacts.
Have students trace how gasoline, beef, lumber, or minerals used locally may connect consumers to environmental change in Latin America.
