What Students Need to Do: Students identify why trees are being cleared in Brazil, including farming, cattle ranching, logging, mining, and road building. They explain effects on habitats, climate, soil, water, and Indigenous communities.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can use a map, photo, or short source to describe where forest loss occurs and what causes it. They can connect one cause to several environmental and human effects using accurate evidence.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think all tree cutting is illegal or that fires are always natural. They may also confuse the Amazon with all of Brazil or assume forest loss affects only animals.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Name one cause of Amazon forest loss and explain two effects, one environmental and one affecting people.

Lesson moves

Give groups a Brazil map, forest-loss images, and cause cards, then have them match locations, causes, and effects.
Ask students to write: Should Brazil limit land clearing if it reduces jobs or farm income? Support your answer with two facts.
Play a cause-and-effect card sort where teams build accurate chains from road construction or cattle ranching to later consequences.
Compare a common product, such as beef, soy, or timber, with a supply-chain map showing possible links to Amazon land clearing.
