What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students trace cause-and-effect links among polluted water, unequal water access, deforestation, poor soil, and desertification. They use maps and evidence to explain effects on health, farming, trade, industry, and settlement.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can locate affected regions such as the Sahel and sub-Saharan Africa, then build accurate cause-and-effect chains. They support comparisons with evidence from a map, photo, graph, or short reading.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat Africa as one dry, uniform place. They often confuse water scarcity with water pollution and assume nearby water means safe, equal access. They may describe desertification as the Sahara simply spreading, or miss the two-way link between poor soil and deforestation.

How to Assess It

Give students a map of Africa and ask: “Label the Sahel, then explain one water problem and one land problem using two cause-and-effect chains.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Compare runoff from two soil trays, one planted and one bare, then link the results to deforestation and soil loss.

  2. Use evidence cards to discuss: Which environmental problem most directly affects health, farming, and jobs in a selected African region?

  3. Run a cause-and-effect card sort matching water pollution, water access, deforestation, poor soil, and desertification with locations and impacts.

  4. Examine a Sahel rainfall graph and farmer interview, then write one practical response to land degradation and explain its likely benefit.
