What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify major environmental problems linked to pollution, acid rain, mining, and logging in Canada. They explain how each problem affects water, land, wildlife, health, and jobs.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can trace a clear chain from human activity to environmental effect. They use map or source evidence to explain impacts on the Great Lakes, Canadian Shield, and nearby communities.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think acid rain begins only in Canada or harms only lakes. They may describe mining and logging as entirely harmful or entirely beneficial, without considering environmental and economic tradeoffs.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Choose acid rain, Great Lakes pollution, mining, or logging. Name one cause, two effects, and one possible response.

Ways to Teach It
On a printed Canada map, students place source, effect, and response cards around the Great Lakes and Canadian Shield, then connect them with yarn.
Ask: Who should pay to reduce cross-border air and water pollution, governments, industries, or consumers? Students defend one choice with evidence.
Run a card sort where teams match each activity, such as mining or burning fuel, to environmental effects and possible responses.
Give pairs a printed Great Lakes fish advisory and ask them to identify the pollutant, affected people, and recommended action.
