What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students connect Spanish colonization to the spread of Spanish and Portuguese colonization to the spread of Portuguese, especially in Brazil. They explain how colonizers and missionaries spread Roman Catholic Christianity while Indigenous and African beliefs continued or blended with it.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can use a map to identify where Spanish and Portuguese became dominant languages. The student can explain why Catholic traditions are widespread and give an example of religious blending.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think everyone in Latin America speaks Spanish or that Brazil was colonized by Spain. They may also assume Catholicism replaced all Indigenous and African beliefs or that everyone follows the same religion today.
How to Assess It
- Give students a map showing Mexico and Brazil. Ask them to name each country's main language and write one sentence explaining why Catholicism became widespread in both.
