What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students trace forced migration from Africa to the Caribbean, Brazil, and other parts of the Americas. They explain how enslaved labor supported plantation and mining economies. They also identify lasting influences on language, religion, music, food, and social hierarchies.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can use a map or source to connect forced migration and labor to changes in American societies. The student gives at least two lasting effects and supports each with a specific example.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think slavery occurred mainly in the United States. They may treat Africa as one culture or assume all enslaved people shared the same traditions. They may also describe cultural influence as voluntary exchange instead of survival under forced migration and oppression.
How to Assess It
- On an exit ticket, ask: How did forced African migration shape Brazil or the Caribbean? Name one economic effect and one cultural effect, with evidence.
