SS3H1 is a Georgia social studies standard. These are the elements under it.

What Students Need to Do

Students locate the Inuit, Kwakiutl, Nez Perce, Hopi, Pawnee, and Seminole cultural regions on a North American map. They explain how climate and geography shaped each group’s food, clothing, and shelter.

Students accurately match each nation with its region and describe several cultural features. They use map evidence to explain why homes, clothing, and food differed across regions.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat American Indian cultures as one shared culture or place every nation in the same region. They may also confuse historic practices with how Native people live today.

How to Assess It

Give students a blank regional map and assign one nation. Ask them to mark its region and explain one way geography influenced food, clothing, or shelter.

   Give groups region maps, climate cards, and resource pictures, then have them build a model shelter suited to one assigned environment.
