What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students locate six American Indian cultural regions on a map of North America. They use direction words, coastlines, and nearby land areas to describe each location.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly shade and label the Arctic, Northwest, Southwest, Plains, Northeast, and Southeast on a blank map. They can describe each region’s relative location.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat cultural regions as exact state or national boundaries. They often confuse the Northwest with the Northeast, or place the Plains only in the central United States.
How to Assess It
- Give students a blank North America map and a six-region word bank. Ask them to label each region and write one location clue for the Plains.

Give pairs a blank North America map and six labeled region cards to place, check, and glue in position.
Ask, “What map clues help distinguish the Northwest, Southwest, Northeast, and Southeast?” Students explain using coastlines and cardinal directions.
Play Region Relay: teams draw a region card, point to its location on a wall map, and earn a point for accuracy.
Use a current weather map to compare conditions across the six regions and discuss how location relates to climate.
