Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students find examples of Native people creating books, paintings, music, films, or other works today. They explain what each person created and how Americans encounter or learn from that work.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can name a contemporary Native author or artist, identify the person’s tribal nation when known, and describe one work. The student explains how that work shapes American reading, music, film, or visual art.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think Native peoples belong only to the past. They may treat all tribal nations as one culture or call every Native artwork traditional. They may name an object but not explain the creator’s influence on American life.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Name one contemporary Native author or artist studied today, identify one work, and explain its contribution to American life.

Lesson moves

Give pairs image cards of contemporary Native art; students sort them by medium, then write a caption explaining each artist’s contribution.
Read We Are Water Protectors by Carole Lindstrom, then ask, “How does this Native author influence readers through her story?”
Play a matching game using creator cards, work cards, tribal affiliations, and art forms from the lesson.
Use a tribal nation or museum website to find a current Native event, artist, or book and create a class notice.
