What Students Need to Do
- Students explain how expansion harmed Native nations through land loss, forced movement, violence, and broken agreements. They connect the Trail of Tears, Little Bighorn, and reservations to specific peoples and consequences.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can place the three events in context and explain a cause and effect for each. They distinguish Cherokee removal from Plains resistance and explain that reservations were generally imposed, not freely chosen.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat Native nations as one group or assume they responded to expansion in the same way. They may think the Little Bighorn victory ended conflict or that reservation relocation was voluntary.
How to Assess It
- Give students three labeled boxes: Trail of Tears, Little Bighorn, and reservations. Ask them to write one cause and one impact for each.
