What Students Need to Do

Students explain how contact with Spanish explorers and missionaries changed Native populations, land, trade, culture, and political power in Georgia. They judge which effects were most significant using evidence.

A student can connect specific causes, such as disease or mission building, to short-term and long-term effects. The student supports a judgment with accurate examples from Georgia.

Common Misconceptions

Students may assume all Native groups had the same experience or that population loss came only from warfare. They may also confuse early Spanish missions with later British settlement.

How to Assess It

Give students this exit prompt: “Which had the greatest effect on Native peoples in Georgia: disease, conflict, trade, or missions? Support your choice with two facts.”
