What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify why Spain and Britain explored and settled North America, then compare what each kingdom wanted in the Southeast. They connect wealth, land, trade, religion, and imperial rivalry to specific actions and locations.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can explain that Spain pursued wealth, missions, and territorial claims, while Britain pursued land, trade, resources, and protection against Spanish Florida. The student supports the comparison with evidence from a map, source, or settlement example.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often reduce every motive to finding gold or assume Spain and Britain had identical goals. They may confuse exploration with permanent settlement, or place Jamestown, St. Augustine, and Georgia in the wrong sequence or location.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Give two reasons Spain wanted the Southeast, two reasons Britain wanted it, and one sentence explaining how rivalry shaped settlement. Require one named place as evidence.
