What Students Need to Do: Students explain how each land policy distributed or sold land. They judge the effects on settlement, political trust, land speculators, and Native peoples.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can distinguish grants to heads of households, lottery drawings, and corrupt sales to speculators. They support a judgment about impact with accurate evidence.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think land lotteries awarded money or that every Georgian could enter. They may also confuse the Yazoo fraud with Native removal or assume land policies affected all groups equally.
How to Assess It: Give an exit ticket asking: Which land policy had the greatest impact on Georgia, and what two facts support your choice?

Lesson moves

Give pairs policy cards and consequence cards to match on three labeled mats, then have them defend one match with evidence.
Ask students to write: Which policy most changed Georgia, and who benefited or lost from it?
Run a three-corner clue game where students move to Headright, Land Lottery, or Yazoo and explain each choice.
Use current and historical Georgia maps to trace how one modern county was opened to settlement through state land policy.
