What Students Need to Do

Students connect developments from the late 1800s and early 1900s to changes in work, travel, communication, immigration, and civil rights. They explain the effects of cattle trails, inventions, Jim Crow laws, overseas expansion, and the Panama Canal.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can identify key people, routes, laws, and events, then explain who was affected and how. The student can compare Ellis Island and Angel Island, trace major cattle trails, and connect inventors to changes in daily life.

Common Misconceptions

Students may assume all immigrants entered through Ellis Island, although many Chinese immigrants entered through Angel Island. They may view Jim Crow as personal prejudice rather than enforced laws and practices. They may also confuse the Spanish-American War with the Civil War.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Choose one invention, one immigration or civil rights issue, and one event involving United States expansion. For each, name who was affected and explain one change it caused.

   Give pairs a Western Hemisphere map, yarn, and labels to plot cattle trails, immigrant entry points, and the Panama Canal route.

   Ask students to write: Which development changed daily life most around 1900, and what two facts support your choice?
