What Students Need to Do
- Students explain why cattle were moved from Texas ranches to railroad towns and markets. They locate the Chisholm and Great Western routes and describe the work of Black cowboys.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can trace both routes on a map and connect cattle drives to railroads, northern markets, and economic growth. They include Black cowboys when explaining who performed skilled trail work.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may picture all cowboys as white gunfighters rather than diverse workers with demanding jobs. They may confuse the two routes or think cattle were driven directly from Texas to eastern cities.
How to Assess It
- Give students a blank map and ask them to draw and label both routes. Then ask, “How did cattle trails connect Texas ranches to markets, and who worked on the drives?”
