What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students explain how changes in prices can influence what people produce, sell, or buy. They connect price differences to choices made during historical events.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can predict how a higher or lower price may change a person's decision. They support the prediction with a clear cause and effect explanation.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think higher prices encourage both buyers and sellers in the same way. They may also overlook costs, distance, and risk when explaining choices about where to sell goods.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Beef sells for $5 locally and $12 at a distant railhead. Would a rancher join a cattle drive, and why?

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups cattle cards, travel cost tokens, and town price signs, then have them choose where to sell and explain why.

  2. Ask students to write: How could rising beef prices persuade a rancher to accept the risks of a cattle drive?

  3. Play Price Signal Sort by placing scenario cards under encourages sellers, discourages sellers, encourages buyers, or discourages buyers.

  4. Compare two grocery ads for the same item, then discuss how each price might affect a shopper's choice.
