What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students explain how prices and available choices affect what people buy. They predict how competition among sellers can change prices and consumer decisions.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can compare sellers, prices, and product choices in a market. They can predict a likely purchase and support it with evidence from the situation.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think consumers always buy the cheapest item, ignoring quality, convenience, brand, and need. They may view a market only as a physical store or confuse competition among sellers with conflict. Some assume one seller's price cannot affect another seller's price.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: Two stores sell the same headphones for $18 and $14. A third store charges $12. Explain two likely effects.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Set up two classroom stores selling identical pencils at different prices, then let students spend tokens and explain their choices.

  2. Ask students to write: How would a new shoe store offering lower prices change where families shop?

  3. Play a market choice game where teams select product cards using fixed budgets, then earn points for explaining each purchase.

  4. Compare two local grocery ads and identify how sales, brands, and competing prices could affect a family's shopping list.
