Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students explain how people who buy goods and services depend on people who make or provide them. They also explain how producers depend on customers to buy what they offer.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can label consumers and producers in a familiar example, such as a bakery. They can describe the two-way relationship using clear cause and effect.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think consumers only use goods, not services, or that producers only make physical products. They may also miss that one person can be both a consumer and a producer.
How to Assess It: Ask students to draw a farmer and a grocery shopper. Have them write one sentence explaining how each depends on the other.

Lesson moves

Set up a class market with paper goods, play money, sellers, and buyers, then discuss what each group needed from the other.
Ask students to write: How would a pizza shop and its customers be affected if either group disappeared?
Play Consumer or Producer by reading job and shopping cards while students hold up labeled role cards and explain each choice.
Study a local barber shop and list what customers receive, what the barber receives, and why both depend on the exchange.
