What Students Need to Do: Students identify when people make or provide something and when they buy or use something. They explain how one person can be a producer in one situation and a consumer in another.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can label a person as a producer, a consumer, or both using details from a simple example. The student can give a clear example of each role.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think producers only work in factories or that consumers only buy food. They may also assume a person can have only one role.
How to Assess It: Give this exit ticket: “Maya sells muffins, then buys an apple. Label each action producer or consumer, and explain your choices.”

Lesson moves

Set up a classroom bakery with paper muffins and play money, then have students switch roles between baker and customer.
Ask students to draw themselves producing something and consuming something, then write one sentence about each role.
Play Producer or Consumer by reading action cards while students hold up a P card, a C card, or both.
Interview a cafeteria worker about the service they provide and the goods or services they buy outside school.
