What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students locate each major land acquisition and expedition route on a map. They explain how the United States gained each territory and why settlers moved west. They connect key events, including the Alamo, Texas independence, the Oregon Trail, and the Gold Rush, to westward growth.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can place the Louisiana Purchase, Texas, Oregon, and California on a map. They can sequence the major events and explain each area's path into the United States. They also describe how exploration, migration, and mining changed western settlements.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think Lewis and Clark purchased land or that their expedition crossed land already filled with American settlements. They may confuse the Alamo with Texas independence or assume the United States won the battle. They may also think every Oregon Trail traveler reached Oregon or every Gold Rush miner became rich.
How to Assess It
- Give students a blank map and five labels: Louisiana Purchase, Lewis and Clark route, Texas, Oregon, and California. Have them place each label and write one sentence explaining its role in westward expansion.

Give pairs a blank map, colored pencils, and event cards to map each territory, expedition route, migration trail, and settlement area.
Ask students to write which event most changed westward settlement, then support their choice with two facts from maps or readings.
Run a timeline relay where teams arrange event cards, then earn points by explaining how each event expanded or settled western lands.
Compare a Gold Rush mining town map with a modern boomtown map, then list how rapid population growth changes housing, jobs, and services.
