What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students connect push factors, such as poverty and persecution, with pull factors, such as jobs and freedom. They locate major regions of origin and explain why many immigrants settled in particular cities or regions.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can use a map to connect southern and eastern Europe with cities in the Northeast and Midwest, and Asia with the West Coast. They can explain each pattern using jobs, transportation, family ties, or established communities.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think all immigrants came from Europe, entered through Ellis Island, and settled in New York City. They may also confuse emigration with immigration or assume people moved for only one reason.
How to Assess It
- Give students a blank world and United States map. Ask them to draw two migration routes, label each origin and settlement region, and write one reason for each move.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs yarn, pushpin maps, and immigrant profile cards to trace routes from homelands to United States settlement areas.
Ask students to write why a factory job, religious freedom, or a nearby relative might shape an immigrant’s settlement choice.
Play a matching game with cards showing immigrant origins, reasons for leaving, entry points, jobs, and likely settlement regions.
Use a local census surname map or community history source to identify immigrant groups that settled near your school.
