What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain how work, family life, rights, and choices differed among people in colonial America. They compare viewpoints and support their descriptions with details from images, objects, maps, or short accounts.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can compare two people’s experiences and explain how wealth, age, gender, freedom, or cultural background shaped daily life. They recognize that identities overlapped, such as a woman who was also a farmer or artisan.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume all colonists lived alike or that indentured servants and enslaved people had the same rights. They may overlook women’s and children’s labor or treat Native peoples as one group with one experience.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “Choose two people from colonial America. Write one similarity, one difference, and one source detail that supports your answer.”

Ways to Teach It
Set up stations with pictures of tools, homes, clothing, and workspaces, then have students infer who used each item and why.
Ask students to write: “How might the same colonial town look different to a landowner, an artisan, and an enslaved worker?”
Play a card-matching game linking people, daily tasks, rights, hardships, and source clues, then require students to explain each match.
Compare a local land map with a historical Native homeland map, then discuss how settlement and land ownership affected different communities.
