What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify common patterns in schooling, work, and worship across the colonial regions. They compare details such as town schools, grain farming, cash-crop plantations, shipping, and religious diversity.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can sort accurate examples into the correct region and explain each choice. The student can state at least one similarity and one difference using supporting facts.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often assume every child attended school and every colonist practiced the same faith. They may place all farming in the South, overlooking New England farms and Mid-Atlantic grain farms. They may also treat regional patterns as rules that applied to everyone.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Choose two regions and write one similarity and one difference in schooling, work, or religion. Name both regions and support each claim with a fact.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups three region mats and 12 fact cards to sort, then have them defend two placements using evidence from the cards.
Write: Which two regions were most alike in one area and most different in another? Support both claims with facts.
Play Mystery Region by reading three clues about schooling, jobs, or religion while students hold up the matching region card.
Match colonial products such as cod, wheat, and rice to modern grocery items, then discuss how land and climate shaped regional work.
